Top football players in the Allegheny Mountain League and Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference will square off in an annual All-Star game in Brockway beginning in 2016.

The Frank Varischetti Foundation announced that Frank Varischetti Field will host the contest in late June or early July each year. The inaugural event, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of Brockway’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration, will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, July 1.

Graduated seniors from the Class of 2015-16 will participate. Players will be nominated and selected by the coaches in their respective leagues. Several scholarships will be awarded at the conclusion of the game along with other awards.

“We are pleased and excited to offer an opportunity for the finest football players in northcentral Pennsylvania to play one more game and be recognized as the outstanding student-athletes they are,” Foundation President Barbara Varischetti said.

Brockway lies near the intersection of the two leagues, which comprise 22 teams in 10 counties within a 75-mile radius of Brockway, from West Sunbury and Karns City in Butler County to Curwensville in Clearfield County to Coudersport in Potter County. Brockway competed in the KSAC’s predecessor, The Little 12 Conference, before moving to the AML several years ago.

The late Frank Varischetti played high school football for his alma mater, Ridgway, and was instrumental in developing the “Field of Dreams” in Brockway that now bears his name. Throughout his life, he was an avid supporter of youth sports.

The AML includes Brockway, Ridgway/Johnsonburg, Curwensville, Kane, Elk County Catholic, Sheffield, Cameron County, Smethport, Port Allegany, Coudersport and Otto-Eldred.

The KSAC is made up of Brookville, St. Marys, Punxsutawney, Clarion, Redbank Valley, Union, Clarion-Limestone, Keystone, A-C Valley, Karns City and Moniteau.

Organizers hope fans will enjoy the natural rivalries within the two leagues as well as the lasting friendships and mutual respect that players forge as competitors.

The rosters for the inaugural game will be announced in February and additional details about the game will be released later.
