The 18.9 mile trail connecting Emporium and St. Marys will be officially opened by the West Creek Recreational Trail Association on Monday August 7 at 11AM.  The 13-year project provides four seasons of recreational opportunities.  Walking, cycling, cross country skiing and snowmobiling are permitted on the trail which was funded by both public and private funds.

Users obtain a glimpse of the PA Great Outdoors region by witnessing the natural beauty and wildlife found along the span.  Recently an electronic counter was installed for measuring trail usage.  Since June 17, an average of 130 people per day have enjoyed the flat level surface.  Bird houses serve as mileage posts and signs designate amenities like restaurants and shopping areas, while benches provide a respite for users.

I am excited about the new recreational opportunities the West Creek Trail brings. Not only to  the towns of Emporium and St. Marys but to all of Cameron and Elk Counties as well.  Cyclists and hikers are already regularly using the trail and I am sure snowmobilers are going to love it this winter.  Congratulations to the West Creek Trail Association and everyone involved in the project over the years on job well done.

The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting which will take place near the Cameron/Elk County line at the Rathburn Trailhead on Monday August 7 at 11AM.
