The West Creek Wetland Learning Center is a cooperative effort between the County of Elk, Elk County Planning, and Elk County Conservation District. The project was funded through the County of Elk, Stackpole-Hall Foundation, and the PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR). The facility is open to the public from sunrise to sunset from June through October. The entrance gate to the facility is closed during winter. The facility is intended to be used for environmental education purposes and for non-motorized outdoor recreation (walking, running, wildlife viewing, geocaching, photography, etc.). Visitors can enjoy a 0.25 mile walking trail with interpretive educational signs providing information on wetland wildlife species and wetland functions and values. A wooden observation deck is also found along the trail which overlooks the wetland. The Learning Center also has a pavilion structure that was completed in 2011 with picnic tables and benches. Stormwater management practices were put to use by installing gutters along the roof of the pavilion as well as construction of a rain garden. The rain garden retains water that is directed to it from the roof of the pavilion. The wetlands are located just off West Creek Road near St. Marys, PA.
