Cameron County

Discover Cameron County

Cameron County is a wild and wonderful outdoor paradise. Visitors looking to unplug from their busy lives are attracted to the area to connect with nature and unwind in the quiet mountains and dark skies. Most of the county is covered in lush forests and clear waterways that provide rich habitat for bald eagles, magnificent elk, deer, bear, turkey, other wildlife and a great variety of fish. Each spring, fishermen converge on the many streams in the area for the much-anticipated opening of trout season. Throughout the year, the cold mountain waters provide some of the best fly-fishing in Pennsylvania. Summer brings cyclists to ride the new Wild Elk Gravel trail system. With the arrival of autumn, wildlife enthusiasts come to the mountains to experience the elk rut and to enjoy peaceful camp life. Winter finds snowmobilers riding the many trails in the county.

Welcome to the only gravel destination in the East where more than 1,400 wild elk roam free across vast public lands-an experience so rare and electric that simply pedaling through this landscape feels like riding inside a living wildlife documentary. Centered in Cameron County, this route network spills into nearby counties and threads through Elk, Susquehannock, and Moshannon State Forests

The new Cameron County Elk & Eagle Watching Guide features descriptions and GPS coordinates for 18 elk viewing locations and 9 eagle watching hotspots throughout the county. Cameron County is blessed with strong populations of both elk and eagles and this new guide will help visitors find the best places to view these beautiful creatures.

Emporium

Emporium is the county seat and has many beautiful public art murals throughout the town. The new West Creek Trail connects Emporium with St. Marys. During the winter months the trail provides snowmobilers, riding the nearby state forest trails, easy access to downtown. There is also access for horseback riding on Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trail near Sizerville State Park. A sure sign of spring is the annual Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic in early April, which is one of the largest downriver paddling events in the state. Emporium also hosts a popular Big Foot Hunt during Weekend in the Wilds each July and rings in the holidays with Christmas in the Wilds.

Sinnemahoning & Driftwood

The Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park is a beautiful place to learn about the wild animals that inhabit this spectacular mountainous region. You can take a guided eagle spotting pontoon boat tour of the Stevenson Dam. The Bucktail Monument in Driftwood, pays tribute to the local soldiers of the 42nd Infantry, known at the Bucktails, who fought in the Civil War. The Little Museum in Driftwood was named one of “Pennsylvania’s Top 10 Seasonal Museums”.
